Item Description

Walking through walls in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, piling up money in a long role-playing game or shrugging off a brutal boss with infinite health: for a lot of DS owners, the Action Replay DS was where all of that started. Datel's cheat device for the Nintendo DS launched in 2006 and quickly became the best-known way to bend handheld games to your will.

The setup is wonderfully simple. The game card plugs into the Action Replay, the Action Replay goes into the system, and a menu lets you switch on codes from Datel's ready-made library before the game boots. Because it works with the game's memory in real time, the effects kick in while you play, and more adventurous users could even write their own codes in hexadecimal.

It is very much a device of its era. The original Action Replay DS stopped receiving firmware updates at version 1.71, so its sweet spot is the DS library of the mid-2000s rather than late-generation releases. That era was a great one to experiment with, and the Action Replay captures the playful, slightly mischievous side of portable gaming that cheat devices have always fed.
