Item Description
Fearsome war machines, bombastic boss fights and a returning band of German super-pilots: Aces of the Luftwaffe: Squadron wears its pulp-adventure influences proudly, and that cheerfully overblown tone is a big part of its charm. HandyGames, the German studio behind it, built a vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up around a four-pilot squadron, each flyer with a personality and story of their own, and tells the whole campaign through fully voiced banter between the pilots.
The flying is classic arcade shooter at heart. You weave through bullet patterns, blast formations of fighters and ground targets, and grab the hefty power-ups enemies leave behind, so your firepower is always swelling mid-fight. Each pilot also brings special abilities to the battle, and saving them for the right moment is the difference between scraping through a wave and cruising past it.
The campaign builds stage by stage toward showdowns with the Aces themselves and their oversized war machines, boss fights that fill the screen with fire. As your squadron levels up, you unlock upgrades along each member's personal skill tree, so every pilot grows into a specialist, and chasing those upgrades gives you a reason to fly earlier stages again.
The real draw on Switch is that the whole campaign can be played by up to four people on one console, each with a controller in hand, turning a solo bullet-dodger into a noisy living-room dogfight. It is a far more forgiving entry point than the genre's hardcore bullet-hell games, which makes it an easy shooter to hand to friends who would never touch a Cave title, and a fun excuse to get the whole couch flying in formation.
