Item Description

Few game premises top this one: a rap superstar is paid for a Middle Eastern concert with a diamond-encrusted skull, then watches it get stolen by a warlord. 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand takes that wonderfully absurd premise and runs with it, dropping Fiddy and a G-Unit partner into a war-torn city with orders to get the skull back at any cost.

Underneath the swagger is a sturdy third-person cover shooter from Swordfish Studios, published by THQ in 2009. Firefights sweep through bombed-out streets, compounds and hideouts as you work through mercenaries and the paramilitary forces of Kamal, the villain who swiped the prize. Close-range takedowns are brutal and cinematic, a score system rewards aggressive, stylish play, and a steady drip of new weapons keeps the arsenal growing. Your partner can be Tony Yayo, Lloyd Banks or DJ Whoo Kid, controlled by the game or, when it launched, by a friend over online co-op, and each brings his own fighting style to the squad.

The soundtrack is pure 2000s G-Unit, with 50 Cent's music pumping beneath the gunfire, and the dialogue is every bit as profane and outrageous as you would expect from a game starring the man himself. That self-aware, over-the-top energy is exactly why it has kept a cult following long after most celebrity tie-ins were forgotten. It followed 2005's Bulletproof, and reviewers at the time were pleasantly surprised to find the sequel a far more polished action game than its predecessor.

Today it plays like a time capsule of the moment when hip-hop stardom and big-budget console shooters collided, equal parts action movie and music video. This PAL release adds import appeal for collectors who enjoy tracking down the European versions of Xbox 360 favorites, and for anyone who remembers the era, few games capture its bravado quite so loudly.

About the game

The game revolves around rapper 50 Cent. The co-player's character can be one of three other members of the G-Unit crew: Tony Yayo, Lloyd Banks, or DJ Whoo Kid, each specializing in different combat techniques. The co-player is either run by the game or through online cooperative play. The game is set in an urban warzone in an unnamed Middle Eastern country, where 50 Cent and G-Unit have been hired to play a rap concert. After the concert the promoter, Anwar is unable to pay them the US $10-million in cash he promised, but relents after being threatened. However, instead of the cash they were promised, he gives them a diamond-and-pearl encrusted human skull (bearing a striking resemblance to a platinum cast diamond encrusted skull by artist Damien Hirst) as collateral. This is promptly stolen by a paramilitary group led by the terrorist Kamal. 50 Cent (with the help of a selected G-Unit partner) decides to get it back at any cost and they soon find there is a much bigger enemy than Kamal. In the video game, he kills Kamal, Anwar, his enemies and he retrieves his skull.
