Gears of War 2 arrived on the Xbox 360 in 2008 and did exactly what a great sequel is supposed to do — it took everything that made the original iconic and turned the dial up. The cover-based combat feels tighter and more visceral, the set pieces are larger and more cinematic, and the story of Delta Squad's war against the Locust Horde pushes deeper underground and gets genuinely dark. Marcus Fenix and the crew feel like fully realized characters here, and the writing has enough weight to make you care between the chainsaw moments.
The multiplayer suite that shipped with Gears 2 was a landmark for the Xbox 360 era. Horde Mode — introduced here for the first time in the series — became one of the most imitated co-op modes in gaming history, pitting you and up to four friends against increasingly brutal waves of Locust. It's the kind of feature that had people talking for years and that you can still appreciate today with a couch co-op partner.
Visually, Gears 2 pushed the Unreal Engine 3 to its limits and produced some of the most atmospheric war imagery of its generation.
