You arrive as a new Slayer, one of the warriors trained to fight back, and Toukiden: The Age of Demons wastes little time before putting a demon the size of a temple in front of you. This was the game that launched Omega Force's Toukiden series, and it brought the monster-hunting formula to the PlayStation Vita with a flavor all its own.

That flavor comes from Japanese mythology and history. The Oni are grotesque, imaginative creatures pulled from folklore, and the battlegrounds they haunt are fragments of different periods of Japan's past, torn loose and twisted by the invasion. Combat centers on taking these monsters apart: you target individual limbs, horns and tails, sever them to blunt an Oni's attacks, then purify the pieces to collect the materials that become your next weapon or suit of armor. A roster of weapon types, from sword and spear to gauntlets and bow, supports very different approaches, from staying glued to an Oni's legs to picking off parts at range.

The Mitama system is the game's signature twist. Mitama are the souls of famous historical figures, freed from the Oni as you progress, and equipping them grants your Slayer new abilities and defines the role you play in a fight. Collecting them adds a layer of discovery for anyone who enjoys Japanese history, and building around them gives each hunter a distinct identity.

Hunts can be tackled with a party drawn from Utakata's supporting cast, each with a personality and story of their own, or with up to three other players over local ad-hoc play. Omega Force was best known for the swarming battles of Dynasty Warriors, and Toukiden showed a more patient, focused side of the studio. It is a satisfying choice for Vita owners who want a hunting game with real atmosphere, and the starting point of the story that Toukiden: Kiwami would later expand.
