Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs asks you to befriend one for a moment, borrow its strength, and then let it go home. That idea drives the whole Ranger series, and this third and final DS entry carries it to the island region of Oblivia, where a gang called the Pokémon Pinchers is chasing down Pokémon and bending them to its own purposes. The adventure starts at full tilt, with your Ranger and partner Summer (or Ben, if you play as the girl) soaring on a Staraptor in mid-pursuit of the Pinchers before you have even settled into the controls.

Everything happens on the touch screen. To capture a Pokémon you draw loops around it with the Capture Styler while it darts, charges and fires attacks across the screen, and if an attack cuts through your line, the Styler takes damage. That turns every encounter into a small action puzzle: a skittish Pokémon wants quick, tight circles, while a big one rewards patience and timing. Your first partner is a memorable one, Ukulele Pichu, a little Pichu whose broken instrument you repair early in the story, and more partners join as the journey goes on.

The Guardian Signs give this entry its name and its biggest new trick. By sketching a symbol on the touch screen you call on a Pokémon's help outside of captures, and the grandest signs summon Legendary Pokémon. Raikou, Entei and Suicune all answer the call as you explore and island-hop through Oblivia, and drawing a sign to bring a Legendary to your side has a ceremonial thrill the mainline games never offered. Guardian Signs also added cooperative missions for up to four players, something the earlier Ranger games didn't have.

It was a big hit in Japan, where it topped the sales charts for its first two weeks, and it went on to sell more than 1.5 million copies worldwide. Critics found it lighter than the main series, and that is part of its appeal: bright island settings, a cast that never takes itself too seriously, and a capture system that could only exist on a DS stylus. As the closing chapter of the Ranger trilogy, it is the series' last word on its own ideas and a refreshing side road for Pokémon players who want to spend time with Pokémon instead of battling them.
