Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. Developed by nStigate Games, the studio formerly known as Nihilistic Software, it launched on the same November 2012 day as Black Ops II and fills in the shadowy years between the two console games.

The campaign is told through classified files, and each of its ten Operations drops you into a covert mission from the Cold War years between the two console games, with familiar Black Ops faces such as Frank Woods back in the field. The Operations are short and punchy by design, built to be finished on a commute, and they sit alongside Time Trials, which turn training courses into score races, and Hostiles, a survival mode where waves of enemies pour onto multiplayer maps and every round you survive raises the pressure.

The controls lean on the hardware in smart ways. Grenades and knife kills go to the touchscreen, and the rear touchpad and d-pad pick up the duties the missing stick clicks would normally handle. The game was also built around eight-player multiplayer over Wi-Fi or local ad hoc, with familiar modes such as Team Deathmatch and a full Create-a-Class system of perks and killstreaks.

Critics were hard on its brief campaign, but Declassified is still the only Call of Duty made specifically for the Vita, and Hostiles is a satisfying arcade-style mode in short bursts. For a Black Ops fan or a Vita library, it is the handheld chapter of Woods and Mason's story and a curious snapshot of how far Activision pushed Call of Duty onto a portable.
